Wells Forest is located in a region of Maine that typically has historically supported industrial forestry practices. The property is adjacent to Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge.
The Maine Natural Areas Program has identified a number of important habitats on Wells Forest. There is an inland wading bird habitat along Sunkhaze Stream, designated wood turtle habitat along the stream in the northwest corner of the property and a designated deer wintering yard in the southern half of the Milford Property. Best Management Practices will leave buffer around critical sites such as these.
This property has been under industrial forest management for the past century or more until we purchased it in 2004. High grading has occurred up until that purchase. This has resulted in a patchwork of 55 timber types separated by age and species composition.
